چکیده

Geographical information exists in multiple forms such as cartographical maps, images, and texts. Effective retrieval systems for geographical information are currently studied by both geospatial information scientists and library/information scientists. The two groups take quite different approaches which have rarely been explicitly compared and connected. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of current geographical information retrieval (GIR) and textual information retrieval (IR) systems in dealing with multimedia geographical information, and proposes a new retrieval model, called GeoVSM (Geographical + Vector Space Model), which integrates coordinate-based geographical indexing with keyword-based vector space model in representing information space. Document ranking by relevance is supported by document-query similarity measure taking into account degree of relevance in both spatial domain and thematic domain. To support visual query and browsing, GeoVSM model recognizes the fundamental differences in the dimensionality and configuration of geographical space and thematic space, and demands multi-view visual interfaces based on a “world” metaphor and a “desktop” metaphor. As an example of such interfaces, GeoVIBE is presented that supports a coordinated GeoView and a VibeView for smooth integration of two browsing strategies using geographic clues as well as thematic clues provided by users.

A Semantic Enhanced Model for effective Spatial Information Retrieval

A lot of information on the web is geographically referenced. Discovering and retrieving this geographic information to satisfy various users needs across both open and distributed Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) poses eminent research challenges. However, this is mostly caused by semantic heterogeneity in user’s query and lack of semantic referencing of the Geographic Information (GI) metad...

Development of an Improved Fuzzy Approach to Model Potential Sites for Groundwater Artificial Recharge

Delineation of potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge is an important and challenging task. The purpose of this research is to develop a new data-driven fuzzy approach to model potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge. To achieve this end, the efficient criteria of a proper site for groundwater artificial recharge were first recognized and presented as a conceptual model...

Land use planning for land management using the geographic information system (GIS) in the Loumir watershed of Guilan province in northern Iran

Land use planning is a science that determines the type of land use through studying the ecological character of the land as well as its socio-economic structure. It is possible to plan for the appropriate use of the land and to enhance the present management of the land use by utilizing Geographical Information System (GIS). To this end, our investigators identified and took steps toward devel...
